History

With a wealth of experience spanning over a century, Cofaco is a Portuguese company dedicated to the production and sale of the best quality preserves.

The stories of Cofaco and the Portuguese canning industry are intertwined. From the end of the 19th century, fishing and canning production evolved side by side, a result not only of the industrial expansion that was being felt throughout Europe, but also of the increase in demand due to the two world wars.

In Vila Real de Santo António (Algarve, Portugal), tuna fishing was so important that the production of canned goods became a necessity. It was at this time that its consumption became democratized, allowing this region to become an industrial hub and an international reference. Much of the canned food production was intended for export, mainly to countries such as Italy and Spain.

Later relocated to Ribeira Grande, Cofaco opened the Rabo de Peixe industrial hub in 1994, where all of its production is still concentrated today. Currently, Cofaco is one of the largest industrial employers in the Azores archipelago, with a very important weight in the region’s GDP.
